Outback at Isa
Outback at Isa is a tourist destination in itself and any visit to Mt Isa should start here. It is the area’s visitor information centre, also housing an interactive multimedia gallery, outback park and Riversleigh Fossil Centre. Here you can join the resident palaeontologist on a lab tour, surrounded by skulls, teeth and bones as he captivates you with stories of exciting nearby finds.
It is also home to The Hard Times Mine, a replicated underground mining experience built and operated by real miners. Throw on your bright orange overalls, gumboots, headlamp and hardhat and descend 22metres underground. Here you will be given the opportunity to work some mining machinery and feel the earth move beneath your feet, with the firing of the drill face. It is a rare chance to experience first hand the daily workings of an underground mine.
