Julia Creek RV Site Camp Host Program a Memorable Outback Experience

McKinlay Shire Council is viewed as an innovator in tourism – winning the Outback Queensland Tourism Association’s Local Government Award for Tourism for the past two years running. They also have a pile of other accolades including the 2015 Queensland Information Centre Association’s Tourist Centre of the Year for their Julia Creek attraction.

Needless to say, they are movers and shakers in tourism and have perfected the art of rolling out the welcome mat for their guests.

One of the jewels in their crown is the parcel of land adjacent to the Julia Creek watercourse that they made available for free self-contained RV camping. This has resulted in the Shire’s popularity sky-rocketing amongst the travelling fraternity.

“Our 2015 tourist figures were up 47% on our 2014 figures. So we are going from strength to strength,” McKinlay Shire Council Tourism Coordinator, Georgia Fleming said.

Apart from staying for 96 hours for free, travellers also have the chance to volunteer their time as Camp Hosts of the RV Site for two to three week stints.

Camp Host Coordinator, Katrina Harling said the Council was seeking couples who are self-sufficient in their own caravans and who had a genuine love of the outdoors.

“It is the perfect way to experience outback living, to enjoy some time outdoors working with fellow travellers and to get to know a few local characters throughout your stay,” she said.

“Our Camp Hosts always tell us that they will never forget Julia Creek,” she added.

The Camp Host program runs from April to September with vacancies throughout the year. Go to www.atthecreek.com.au for more information.
